The European Union has confirmed that Turkish nationals will not need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This clarification comes after confusion regarding the system, which aims to strengthen security for visa-free travelers entering the Schengen Area.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic authorization system for travelers from visa-exempt countries wishing to visit the Schengen Zone. The system enhances security and streamlines border controls.

Similar to the U.S. ESTA, ETIAS screens travelers before they arrive at EU borders. However, it does not affect those requiring a visa for entry, including Turkish nationals.

EU Dispels Rumors

The EU Delegation to Türkiye recently addressed misinformation suggesting that Turkish citizens would need ETIAS. In an official statement, they confirmed that the system does not apply to Turkish nationals since Turkey is not a visa-exempt country. As such, Turkish travelers will continue following existing visa requirements without any additional processes.

“Türkiye will not be part of ETIAS, and Turkish visa-free travelers will not be required to apply for ETIAS,” remarked the EU Delegation to Türkiye. “Since Türkiye is not a visa-exempt country, Turkish nationals do not fall within the scope of ETIAS. They will require a visa – and not an ETIAS travel authorisation – to cross the EU’s external borders.”

This clarification also applies to diplomatic and service passport holders from Turkey, who do not need ETIAS authorization. In addition, the EU emphasized its commitment to accurate communication to ensure Turkish travelers clearly understand their travel obligations.

“Since ETIAS is not applicable to them, Turkish nationals who can travel visa-free will not need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation,” added the EU Delegation to Türkiye. “They will be able to travel without a visa and without an ETIAS travel authorisation.”

Implications for Turkish Travelers

For Turkish citizens, they will still need to apply for a Schengen visa to visit EU member states. In addition, there is no impact to diplomatic and service passport holders, who already enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Zone.

Moreover, Turkish travelers don’t need to deal with additional bureaucracy and costs of the ETIAS system. Specifically, ETIAS charges EUR 7 per application for eligible travelers. However, authorities remind travelers to comply with standard visa procedures and prepare all necessary documentation before visiting the Schengen Zone.

How Does ETIAS Work?

The ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization mandatory for eligible non-EU nationals. It aims to identify potential risks before travelers arrive.

The EU has confirmed that it will launch six months after it implements Entry-Exit System (EES). However, authorities have not yet confirmed the timeframe for the EES launch, initially supposed to go live on November 10, 2024.

Applying for an ETIAS visa is simple and fully online. The travel authorization is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, travelers can enter Schengen countries multiple times. Each visit must comply with the 90-day rule within a 180-day window.
